Theory Make it Count uses a sequentially based, logical approach to your theory teaching, and it’s easy to check as you plan out your week. 
We’ve done the heavy lifting – you just have to select the activities that lead to fun theory teaching without the pain of theory books or lots of grading.

Are you prepping your students for a theory exam? Theory Make it Count is compliant with the National Federation of Music Clubs and Texas Music Teachers Association theory tests grade 1-8, and uses a sequentially based, logical approach to your theory teaching.  Whether you are preparing for a state test, or just want to fill in the theory gaps for your students,  Theory Make It Count is an easy, painless way to introduce theory in your studio. 

Think of this resource as a “two-step” dance into theory learning.

Here’s the basic choreography

Step One

Evaluate your students.  Use a worksheet, a practice test, or just ask your student theory questions.  Decide where your student can use the most help.

Decide if you want to review the material from the previous grade - OR have them take on the challenge of the upcoming grade to see where they are at.

Step Two 

Choose!  Look at Theory Make it Count. WHEN YOU OPEN –  you will be making a copy.  You can rename your copy – and use it to customize for your studio!

The first tab on the left, labeled “Year”, is for YOU.  List your students according to level for easy reference.
The second tab is labeled “Apps” and contains a list of the apps used in Theory Make it Count.

The third tab is labeled “Levels and Concepts.”  This tab outlines all of the subjects and learning goals, grouped into levels.  These levels are compliant with the Texas Music Teachers Association graded theory tests for levels 1-8, and the NFMC tests.   You can place your students’ names in the second column, if you wish.

The next several tabs are for each level of learning.  Here’s where the fun begins! Choose the apps or off-bench activities that suit your style and your studio needs.  The column on the right is labeled, “My Ideas”.  Pop in any additional resources in these spots.  You can even jot notes of how effective these different activities are for your students.
The last tab is a list of the subjects covered.  We have left a few blank tabs for you to add even more ideas. 

Make sure to explore all of the links under “activities” for the different grade levels. Many of these activities and games can be adapted to various levels within your studio. 

Now that you have evaluated your students and have chosen their activities – have fun!  You can present these activities in private or group lessons. Theory Make It Count can be a valuable resource for your off-bench time – all your planning is DONE.

Works online, too!

During group online lessons – send students to breakout rooms in Zoom to work on theory apps, Quizlets, or worksheets.  Rotate through your students to check on their progress and give encouragement. Or, copy the links and send them home for extra practice.
