Off the Charts: Bro Jozzz is the NEWEST addition to the course!

Bro Jozzz is from my popular Jumpstarts series. These thematic units help pianists of three levels develop skills beyond the page with clever activities and instructional videos.

Bro Jozzz uses a familiar tune—”Brother John”—and shows players how to read and create hip arrangements of the old tune with just chord charts and audio files. Don’t worry, the instructional videos show you exactly how to do everything.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the learning to play piano in a band course. For my own personal enjoyment as someone who has played classically for nearly 30 years I have learned so much.”

-Sophie

What’s in this for you?

[Leila] After graduate school I experienced a major revelation. When someone handed me a chord chart and asked me to play in a band, it was revealed to me how lopsided my piano skills were. I could play and perform plenty of European dead guy pieces but my skill set had major deficits.

It was embarrassing, and ever since then I teach and preach out of reaction to my experience. I don’t want ANYONE—that means YOU—to feel the shame and inadequacy that I did.

[Drew] And I’m excited about offering this course because I’ve encountered so many piano players who want to play by ear, but have never been given ways to develop that skill set. Having grown up playing by ear and then receiving formal training later, I discovered just how valuable it was to be able to play from sheet music AND play by ear from a chord chart. Balancing our classical training with improvisation opens up opportunities for us to play with other musicians in a band, whether that’s just for fun in the garage, in a church setting, or out in the community.

Why is the course divided into three modules: one for ears, one for eyes and one for hands?

Have you heard this quote from Sir Ken Robinson?

Truthfully, what happens is, as children grow up, we start to educate them progressively from the waist up. And then we focus on their heads, and slightly to one side.

Music is an art to be experienced. Playing music requires the ears, eyes, hands—really the entire body. Our goal is to intentionally attend to the training of a musician from head to toe. In this course and curriculum you will be encouraged to listen and learn with your brain and your body.

This “pluralistic” approach stems from Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligence theory that we learn through various modalities.

What works for one may not work for another. As players and teachers, we must be ready to pull out an array of ways to experience concepts and skills so that you and your students can blossom and develop into balanced—not lopsided—keyboard musicians.

What basic knowledge is important to benefit from this course?

With this course, you’ll be well equipped to play in a band. There are some essentials you need to know and that’s why we preface the modules with an Overview that outlines the foundation required to make the most of the course.

As you work through the modules, the basic knowledge you bring will be reinforced and sharpened and brought to a whole new level of understanding.

AND…RECENT ADDITIONS!

  1. Christmas chord charts for “Silent Night”

  2. Unique piano solo arrangement of “What Child is This?”

  3. Detailed curriculum plans for a summer camp or group lessons
