The idea of a Composium came to me from conversations with my mother, a retired art professor. She is 87 years young and continues to design award-winning textile designs.
One of my mother’s quilts hangs just behind my Yamaha grand named Bella.
For decades, Mom regularly attended workshops where she joined other artists as they developed and refined their work. They looked over each other’s shoulders and genuinely enjoyed the creative process alongside each other.
I was so envious of this supportive exchange, which can be contrary to what musicians experience as they practice and create at the keys. I desperately wanted to change that.
My envy got my wheels turning, and Composiums were born!
Recently, Martha Beck confirmed what I had always suspected: Creativity is essential to your well-being.

Wars, political changes, fires, floods, and uncertainty (LIFE!) make us anxious. Anxiety leads to more anxiety. It’s a vicious spiral.
“Research on creativity indicates that anxiety shuts down creativity. Deliberately entering and moving further in the ‘creativity spiral’ can pull us out of the anxiety spiral.” (Beck p24)
Sigh. This book brought me to tears, and I don’t cry easily. Beck’s words explain what I’ve been experiencing over the years. Composing music is not only enjoyable to me, it’s been therapeutic and healing! Now I know why.
