Flip the Lid
Flip the Lid
Flip The Lid is a piano camp curriculum targeting beginning students up to early intermediate skills. It is unique because it allows you to combine students of different ages and skills in one class.
The title, Flip The Lid is in no way referring to losing control or being angry. It is about opening up the lid of the piano to discover how to make new sounds and the minuscule details that make up this beautiful instrument.
Piano teachers enjoy teaching the art of making beautiful sounds at the piano. If you have mostly beginners, as I do, a lot of time is spent on posture, hand position dynamics and steady beat.
But what about the artistry and craftsmanship that is required to create the piano itself?
Do we ever stop and think of the mechanisms needed to coordinate its thousands of parts?
How could knowing this information assist our students in appreciating the acoustic piano?
During the summer of 2019 my students and I decided to explore the grand piano from different angles:
Piano Pieces (history)
Naked Piano (mechanism)
Piano Percussion (versatility)
Prepared Piano (creativity)
Making a Grand Piano (craftsmanship)
From the intricacies of the piano’s mechanism to the grandeur of its construction, flipping the lid of the piano opens up a whole new world to our students.
Flip The Lid piano camp curriculum is not exclusive to groups of students or only to summer. It is quite easy to adapt the lessons to a private setting and it would bring a breath of fresh air to your piano lesson routine.
