Students may be able to clap a rhythm but knowing that the element of rhythm is different from pitch or melody is not intuitive as I assumed!

I noticed this recently when I asked students to notate rhythms with sidewalk chalk at home for an off-bench assignment. Many of them notated the rhythm on the staff with pitches. Lesson learned—students need a music element vocabulary and I need to be VERY specific when giving definitions and directions!

And this vocabulary will be even more important to students as they continue their study of others’ music as well as making their own.

What’s included?

Two colorful infographics identifying and defining main elements of music: meter, rhythm, articulation, tempo, mood, melody, harmony, dynamics and texture. The background of the infographics is part of Andrea West’s Many Moods image.

The images are provided in PDF and png formats.

One color page created by Andrea West that echoes the Many Moods of Music image and her Music Moods of Music resource.

How to use the infographics:

1. Print and ask students to keep them in their binders or practice pouches for future reference.

I included the infographic in a Piano Care Package that I sent to all my students.

2. Use them to correlate with the Cookie Cutter Composing. Young composers must be able to name the parts of music as they put them together into original work.

3. Print them on large banners when offering a composition unit or any time for easy reference. One or more of these elements are addressed in EVERY lesson! You see an example below of how a creative teacher made large banners of the Music History Infographics.

4. Share them on your screen during online lessons.

5. Print and add the infographics to a piano care package as I did prior to our studio virtual recital. I sent the following in padded envelopes:

  1. Infographics—double sided

  2. Four of Andrea West’s Coloring Pages. Remember, one of them is included with this resource and she has many more!

  3. Water color pencils and a paint brush. Color the a design and then smear the color with a dampened paint brush and smear it like water colors.

  4. Four large paper clips as a concrete practice tool.

  • Play one measure. If zero errors earn a link or paper clip.

  • Play the next measure. If zero errors, earn another paper clip.

  • Then play both measures and if zero errors, link the two clips together.

  • Continue until all four paper clips are chained together.

A scented mechanical pencil to keep close to the piano at all times. When lost, students can use their noses to find the pencil!

Tabs/arrows so that students can mark the right page in a music book. The tabs double as arrows for students to place in their music scores to point to trouble spots that need Link and Chain practice or any other kind of practice.

Just like the Music History infographics, the Music Element Infographics can be made into large banners, too. These were made at Vista Print.
