Noodle Challenge Day 15

Soundscape

Healthy striving is self-focused: How can I improve?
Perfectionism is other-focused: What will they think?
— Brené Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection

Noodle Info

Often, creators relate sound to images. Do you?

Although I adore taking photos of nature’s wonders, I rarely explore how the sights that inspire my eyes may transfer to my ears and my fingertips at the keys.

Perhaps it’s my personality and the way I like to create. When there are 88 keys and no boundaries or guidelines it can lead to decision fatigue and overwhelm.

I’m attempting to warm up to the idea and invite you to try it.

I call this “free-play” experience Soundscaping.

Using the photo below or one of your own photos as inspiration, noodle around and see what comes.

Psst…get out your recording app!

Your Challenge

Choose a picture.

Imagine how the elements of that photo may sound on the piano.

You may wish to stick with black keys, which guarantee an appealing sound.

Or, choose a favorite chord progression.

EXTRA: Plug your soundscape into an A B A form. Perhaps one section includes a melody, and the other is more pattern-based.

For example

  • Section A: Waterfall (pattern)

  • Section B: Flowers (melody)

  • Section A: Waterfall (pattern)

Always ask yourself: What if I?

Want to continue to feel freer at the keys?
Just Wing It is a Jumpstart currently available in Space to Create: CULTIVATE or CONNECT that guides free improvisation.
Wait…how can it promote freedom and yet provide a guide?
That was the mystery I had to solve in Just Wing It, and I found a solution!
