I have insecurities of course, but I don’t hang out with anyone who points them out to me.

Noodle Info

Why is pop music so popular?

Beyond the glitz and groove, its mass appeal boils down to cool chord progressions.

Some complain about the limitations of FOUR-CHORD songs, but it’s evident that they’re on to something.

It would serve us well to get under the hood of what they do so we, too, can create noodles that appeal!

Your Challenge

Head to Get Inspired!: Episode 19. It includes videos of pop hits. Some feature original artists, and others feature clever covers.

Along with each video comes:

  1. Chord symbols of the main chord progression

  2. A pictogram of each chord

  3. Nashville Numbers.

Choose a chord progression and start noodling. Perhaps…

  • Use a Cut-and-Paste Pattern.

  • Turn the chord progression on its head by playing it in a different time signature.

  • Explore creating a melody from the chords and add a left-hand pattern.

EXTRA: Choose a favorite video, slow it down (tips on how to slow down a YouTube video are in the post), borrow the patterns you hear, and try to play with it.

Always ask yourself: What if I?
