Mixolydian Magic

Noodle Info

No worries if you aren’t sure what Mixolydian means. Or perhaps you’ve never heard of the term?

Here’s how I like to think of it: it’s a G major scale without the F#. It’s not major or minor; it’s Mixolydian.

This major scale with a lowered or flat 7th offers all kinds of magical chords for your challenge below.

Psst…get out your recording app!

Your Challenge

Play through the tried-and-true chord progression from G Mixolydian.

Tip: Notice that only the first chord is minor—that’s what the lowercase “m” indicates in the Dm chord symbol below.

Explore different ways to play the chords with the Cut-and-Paste Patterns or your own patterns.

Use the word MIXOLYDIAN as inspiration for a rhythm pattern.

EXTRA: Transpose the Mixolydian chord progression to a new key. Remember, think of a major key and lower the 7th scale degree.

Always ask yourself: What if I?
