Noodle Challenge Day 2
Wake Up Muse
“A lot of people think creativity is a gift,
and while that’s true to an extent, it’s a practice more than anything.
That means it’s something you cultivate.
The most effective way to do that is by setting aside time to play.”
Noodle Info
Do ideas come to you or from you?
Elizabeth Gilbert asks that question in her book Big Magic.
Regardless of where ideas come from, your muse—your imagination tank—must awaken when you noodle.
Now is the time to summon it and PLAY. (See the quote above.)
Psst…don’t forget to grab your recording app!
Your Challenges
#1 Play by Ear
Although looking at the notation below is tempting, try to play the tune “Are You Sleeping” by ear FIRST.
Tip: begin on Middle C.
Then, read the score below and be inspired or entertained by my lyrics. 🤓
#2 Add a Left-Hand Accompaniment
Study the chords used to harmonize this melody—see how handy these four primary chords can be?
Substitute a new left-hand pattern from the Copy-and-Paste Patterns for the whole notes.
#3 Explore the Magic of Repetition
Choose one measure of the tune.
Repeat that measure in the right hand while your left hand plays the chord progression and pattern of your choice.
Change up your right-hand pattern on bars 4 and 8—let your muse show you what to play!
EXTRA: Create a touching ballad that pulls on the heartstrings using the tune and chord progression.
Always ask yourself: What if I?
Did you stumble upon something amazing today?
