This beloved African American spiritual comes to life through five imaginative variations that paint the familiar lyrics with changing colors, moods, and musical textures.
Originally inspired by my early-intermediate arrangement published by Willis Music in All-American Piano Solos, this expanded late-intermediate version was created after Diane Madsen, pianist and teacher, asked, "Would you write a more advanced setting?"
I'm so glad she did.
Remaining in G major and 6/8 throughout, each variation explores a different verse of the song. From energetic rhythmic passages to tender lyrical moments, pianists are invited to tell the story—not simply play the notes.
One variation even includes a gentle nod to Brahms' Lullaby, making the "tiny little babies" verse especially memorable.

Performance Tips
Articulation markings are intentionally minimal, encouraging performers to make thoughtful musical decisions.
Suggested tempos are only that—suggestions. Feel free to shape each variation to fit your own interpretation.
Variation 2 uses a lightly polyphonic texture to depict the delightful complexity of "mothers and fathers." Observe the suggested fingerings for the smoothest performance.
Listen for the hidden quotation of Brahms' Lullaby during the "tiny little babies" variation, where a little extra pedal creates a warm, singing tone.
Watch the performance video below to hear my interpretation, then make it your own. I'd love to hear yours!
