Noodle Challenge Day 28

Yes and

Yes, and” is a pillar of improvisation.
It’s the acceptance principle — when someone in a scene states something, accept it as truth.
The “and” part of this principle means to build on that reality that has been set.

Noodle Info

Two of the most important rules in the acting world of improv are:

  1. Yes

  2. And

Yes: Actor #2 must accept the premise of Actor #1.

And: Both actors must build on that premise, continue to say “YES, AND” and a “scene” is born.

Your Challenge

Explore the idea of YES AND using the phrase above.

Play the phrase.

Explore at least one way to add to the idea.

Tips:

  • Create an “answer” to this question.

  • Repeat it, and add fill notes to the melody.

  • Repeat it, and craft a new left-hand pattern.

EXTRA:

Plug this pattern into a favorite chord progression and create a piece with a beginning, middle, and end.

Always ask yourself: What if I?

This Noodle Challenge came about because I began noodling around a year ago. Three of my noodles became ingredients for fully notated compositions.

YES, I accepted their premise. AND explored their possibilities.

I recently released two collections of called Interludes for the Soul.

I’d be honored for you to listen to them on YouTube, Spotify, or wherever you stream music.
Perhaps they will inspire you to compose with your noodles, too!
