Noodle Challenge Day 26

Spin for a Melody

Take chances, make mistakes.
— Mary Tyler Moore

Noodle Info

Although I prefer to let the music come organically when I noodle, sometimes letting chance determine a melody is fun.

It may create something beautiful that you would have never crafted yourself!

Psst…get out your recording app!

A huge thank you to the late Susan Paradis for the idea of numbering pencil erasers. Her creative teaching legacy is continued by her daughter Liz. Read more here.

Your Challenge

Choose a key—major or minor, or any mode for that matter.

Number each key from 1-8 in your head, or use small erasers, as shown above.

Click on the GREEN button below to spin for a number. This determines the scale degree that will begin your melody.

(TIP: do NOT remove the number when given a prompt.)

Write down that number.

Spin again for the second melody pitch and write it down.

Decide which direction you will play for the next pitch—up or down.

Continue these steps until you have a collection of notes that makes a melody that pleases you.

Explore rhythmic options—which pitches will be held longer? shorter?

EXTRA:

Harmonize your melody with chords.

Always ask yourself: What if I?
