Sight Reading Made Easy with Note Quest

Why did piano teacher Grace Lee spend enormous amounts of time, energy and capital to develop Note Quest when it seems that the pitch reading app market is already saturated?

That’s the question I had in the back of my mind when Grace invited me to lunch back in 2018 at the MTNA conference. She wanted my input on her dream project that eventually led to her app called Note Quest.

That question has been thoroughly answered thanks to our recent conversation over Zoom. Now it’s clear why Grace was determined to make Note Quest a reality. She’s not only passionate about pitch recognition but also the process of sight reading and found a way to develop an app that offers pedagogically sound opportunities to teach and test both.

Components of Note Quest

In the video of our Zoom conversation included below, learn the details of both sections of the app.

  • Note Class: features preset, sequential drills of landmark notes AND intervals from the landmark notes that comes with brilliant customization options.

  • Note Fit: features pattern-based, leveled virtual flashcards that students sight read and then self-determine accuracy by listening to the app play the flashcards.

Benefits of Note Quest

There are many benefits, so here are just a few:

  • Grace sees the importance of sequential drills that reinforce the knowledge of landmark notes, then intervals, then patterns based on those landmarks. Players layer and build their skills on what has been mastered previously. The app avoids random drills which can frustrate students and can make them feel like giving up. To learn more about the names used in the app, check out my resource called Grand Staff Map.

  • Players can enter answers on an acoustic piano, on a MIDI keyboard or on an iPad screen.

  • Since it’s remarkably easy to connect your iPad to your computer and share the iPad screen in Zoom, Note Quest is perfect for online lessons.

  • The app provides solutions for reading drills in an online group lesson setting—watch the video below to learn how.

Grab a cup o’ joe or a snack or a cocktail and watch Grace walk us through Note Quest. We get right to the point, dig deep and you’ll feel well-equipped to use the app.
